Do you think it's possible to turn your 250sq.ft. garage into a mini-living space? Seattle-based artist, Michelle de la Vegas sure thought it was and she successfully did. Everything was custom built or salvaged, the structure was raised about 4ft, which helped her fit her bed into the crafty loft space she built. Her background in mixed media assemblage, sculpture, and installation really helped her manage to create this incredible space. Read her bio, here. Michelle was recently featured in NY Times as well.

East African-inspired design by New York label, Suno. I love these fitted high waist shorts I've been seeing everywhere, extra loose on the thigh area..so comfortable and converted into a perfect onesie. Its like Ann Taylor on the bottom half, but a fully-acclaimed techno-version of it. Suno's Fall/Winter 2010 collection is melting...check it.

J.I. Rodale is who we should stand behind when purchasing organic food. Rodale civilized the organic movement way long before it became a social trend. A new book released just this past March, Organic Manifesto: How Organic Farming Can Heal Our Planet, Feed the World, and Keep Us Safe written by Maria Rodale (granddaughter of J.I. Rodale) gives us a glimpse on how we can live a healthier lifestyle by eating organic. There are many reasons behind eating organic. One example is the regulations on safe exposure of chemicals by the government, which is essentially bias. There has been evidence that even a small dose can be just as toxic as large doses.

Happy Våffeldagen (Waffle Day) (!)

Waffle? Really?
Yeah, in Sweden there is an official Waffle Day and it is celebrated today along with the celebration of the start of spring, March 25th! Vårfrudagen (Our Lady’s Day) is associated with the day Mary received the message that she would give birth to Jesus. The day is also known as Annunciation Day. any confusion? Well, there were some dialects and people began to pronounce Vårfrudagen as Våffeldagen, which essentially sounds like "våffel" in turn meaning "waffle." Kind of silly, huh?
Ben & I actually celebrated it last night, Våffeldagen-Eve! Since, the holiday landed on a Wednesday, we couldn't really celebrate it in the morning, so we celebrated last night by eating waffles with berries and I thought to myself, "we need something else to go with this, waffles for dinner, that's it?" So, we made a Tortilla Española. We thought, "This makes sense, waffles are that of Scandanavian and Tortilla Española is Spanish! Since, Ben is part Scandinavian and I'm Spanish, this holiday was celebrated with even more charm!! and yes, it was yum.

hi all !

i haven't been good about making any postings...i've been really busy, swimmin all over. trying to pack things as we try to sell our house, volunteering like crazy, tutoring third-grader triplets, been out of town...we went to LA this past weekend to visit a cousin and stayed at the W Hotel, the place was rad. absolutely gorgeous, we had our own chill area separated from our room...had some amazing food: breakfast at The Little Door, some Cuban food at Porto's in Glendale, had some street food after bar hopping and dancing (Bourdain would be proud), went shopping all over including Mark the Cobrasnake's yard sale off of Fairfax near RVCA, visited Griffith Park and went to keep our heads busy (after an absolutely horrifying hang over) at the Observatory...we definitely got spoiled this past weekend.

so how about that health care reform?

i like you michelle, Let's Move

Back from LA in one piece. This weekend was a bridezilla weekend. No, not really. What is a bridezilla anyway? Being over particular on one's taste because your wedding day is probably the biggest day of your life? If that's the case, then thats perfectly okay. One of my best friend's wedding is coming this June as well as my brother's wedding in Seattle. We went to LA this past weekend to look at dresses and get ideas overall, I think it was a success. I really love weddings, I love everything about them, the general tradition of them, the decor, friends, family, I think it's a wonderful thing. It's been 1 year and 5 months since I've been married and I love it. Below is a photo of my bouquet & I, don't you sometimes wish their freshness would last forever?

We stopped by Babycakes on our way back home...now if you live in LA and haven't snacked here, what are you really waiting for? The place is amazing. Offering all-natural, organic and delicious alternatives free from the common allergens: wheat, gluten, dairy, casein and eggs. The girls that work there remind me of an old-time bakery taking place in the 60's...all dolled up in their cupcake wear. We were impressed (and overwhelmed) by the variety of choices there were and at the end, we didn't even know what we had ordered! We wanted to try everything. Thanks to my friend Hilary, I think if I ever go vegan, Babycakes will sure determine it.

Delicious much, ya?

oh....F F F yeah.

I don't really like profanity. But I had to put something in here that would describe my mood when I saw this visual......

IT IS INCREDIBLE.

I pretty much lifted out of my chair to say, "WOW". Like, very much "WOW".

The place is called, "Home Made". And it is a restaurant located in Milan, Italy and designed to look like a real home yet serving as a restaurant.

Owner Monica Bangari, together with the brilliant architects Riccardo Salvi and Luca Rossire created a space that would bring a luscious, fresh vibe while eating Italian food at its best.

Inside Home Made, there is a little garden designed by landscape architect Carlo Callari of Milan's ARePA studios. The elegantly made chairs are designed by Patricia Urquiola.

This is exactly what makes me miss the world outside of here. In Buenos Aires, anywhere I went...whether it was 100 years old, or built more recently, there was many many ingeniously designed places like this and in Madrid there were also so many creative spaces that I could just walk around for hours admiring all the architecture and design.

Take me back Earth! Soon please!

The entry way of an Italian ceramists' home, Salvi Fausto living in Brescia, Italy. Are those really shrubs of green just floating off onto the edge of another building? ....I think it is. Miraculous.

It is no surprise considering the type of art work he does, check it here.

the New Firefly*

With its neon lighting, best view of Downtown Freemont Street Experience and Plaza’s dome-shaped architecture, the new Firefly* is a hit. If you have lived in Las Vegas long enough to know where to go for great ambience and excellent food, you have probably heard of Firefly* on Paradise, arguably the best Spanish restaurant in Las Vegas and very affordable for that matter. “Fun, affordable, and unique” says John Simmons, owner of Firefly* when discussing his new second location Downtown Las Vegas inside the Plaza Hotel & Casino. The Plaza is one of the more classic Hotel & Casinos of downtown, many films have been shot here and the dome in front of the Plaza where Firefly* is located has one of the most magnificent views of Downtown Freemont. Firefly* will allow guests to experience the rare and the feel of a classic-Vegas dinner, but rather indulging yourself with a much more modern feel and eating tapas or “finger foods” that help create that cordial ambience that the Spaniards are known for achieving in their culture. Firefly* has definitely achieved that kind of free-spirited environment. Here in Las Vegas, there is no other place that can achieve this creativity with food as good as our city allows. We are living in a city that provides 24-hr. entertainment, very much like most European countries. Eat late and chat the night away, Firefly* is the spot deserving its reputation as one of the best menus in town. Try traditional Spanish tapas like Ceviche and Tortilla a la española, which has egg, potato, onion, garlic and filled with goodness, or try more popular menu items such as the dates stuffed with blue cheese and wrapped in bacon, Firefly*fries seasoned with parmesan, herbs and aioli and you can’t leave without ordering a pitcher of the house made Sangria, especially in this Vegas heat, it is so refreshing, take a sip and you’ll feel like you’re sitting outside at a café in Barcelona chatting about life, travel, family, girlfriends, boyfriends and anything that your mind really captures amongst your friends. Not only does Firefly* have great food, but they are also known for having the greatest and certainly, the most friendliest service. Don’t be surprised if your waiter or waitress strolls by your table and begins to talk to you seeming as if they’ve known you for a while, long-lost friends, that’s the kind of service Firefly* brings. Come welcome Firefly’s newest location downtown with a grand opening on September 10th bringing our own Mayor Oscar Goodman to help us celebrate the newest addition to our most promising and evolving Downtown Las Vegas. [Event details to follow]

“I sorta felt the love all around. Did you notice that all of the employees seemed to love being there? “ said Zachary from Seattle on a review about the new hot spot for cupcakes. One thing that is fascinating about Seattle are the coffee shops that are in every corner of every street. Whether its walking your dog, or just going out for a nice walk especially during these lovely summer days, its very unlikely to not stop at a coffee shop on the way. And if you haven't visited Seattle, just to note: the streets are incredibly pedestrian-friendly. A new café except this time serving cupcakes hits the neighborhood of Capitol Hill at 11th and Pike. Cupcake Royale features delicious cupcakes and great art as well. Actually, on the grand opening day of this past July 22nd, Cupcake Royale were handing out free mini-size “Strawberry 66” to their customers. The 66 represents the percentage amount of ingredients that are sourced locally in Washington. Along with their delicious cupcakes, Cupcake Royale is designed by Roy McMakin, a Seattle-based artist and a friend of owner, Jody Hall who designed impressive furniture for the store. Inside it's shiny and splattered with accents of pink yet still retaining a much likable grandmother feel with a bit of a modern twist. In the front, a stained glass cupcake greets visitors as they walk in. The shop serves a variety of flavors from classic vanilla to flavors like lavender, lemon and mint. This is Cupcake Royale's 4th location and best yet. Next time you're in Seattle just look for those big bright pink neon writing and you'll run yourself (unregretfully) into Cupcake Royale!
